For a lot of people, it seems to refer to activities for which they need special outfits.
I've very recently taken up jogging again, after having not done so for many years. I take a perverse delight in jogging at the nearby park in jeans and my work boots -- my anti-fashion fuck you to my color-coordinated fellow joggers, who always look perplexed when they see me. A few have looked around as if to determine the threat from which I'm running.
