The point of keeping Bernie in the conversation to me is keeping him relevant; the Democrats will need him and his supporters if they want to defeat Trump in 2020. His base are active when they have a cause worth fighting for, and if he can get them to get out and vote for the next Democratic candidate, they might have a chance.

Well if you look at it long term the areas where Hilary Clinton did worst were the areas where the Republican supress the vote effort were at their strongest. Things like crossckeck denying 7 million citizens the vote, illegal id checks, faulty machines, closing polling stations in high density areas are what won it for Herr Oberststurmbanngroppenfuhrer.
