I have a daughter, now in her 30s. The other chromosome donor, hereafter referred to as "Whatsisname," was a tough-love proponent and helicopter parent. I, on the other hand, favour leading by example, reasoning through things, and using non-physical discipline as a last resort and never physical discipline.
She rejected everything Whatisname tried to force her to do. When we divorced, daughter came to live with me. I provided required resources, let her get on with shaping her own life, and kept on being my usual self. 16 years after the split, daughter is happily self-employed and far more spartan that spoiled.
