Besides, the stupid people!
I watched a Jay Leno episode one night long ago where he asked questions of people on the street, just to gauge their acuity regarding current events and history. One young girl, who looked to be in her early teens, was asked which President freed the slaves?
Answer...
Kennedy? (She asked)
Remember that the Emancipation Proclamation was only intended to cover the states in the Confederacy (which, of course, did not recognise Lincoln's power as legitimate), and specifically stated that the slaves in the border states that Lincoln still held control over were still under the control of their white masters. Therefore, it did not free a single slave. Granted, the 13th Amendment was passed under Lincoln's presidency, but, since it only was adopted after the assassination, I would have to say Andrew Johnson really deserves the credit for that one. At least Lincoln helped to bring the nation back together. He deserves to have had at least one good thing happen under his watch.
