It matters to the people trying to indoctrinate us into their particular beliefs. That's really the only power their gods have ever had: The power that we ourselves possess to decide which paths are worth our while to study further, and which paths are just too flippin' silly to take seriously.
Or to put it another way, the god of a believer is fucking powerless against an unbeliever's smirk.
