Kind of a silly analogy but it works... The news is like a restaurant. You go and order off the menu a dish where the chef determines the recipe and you gobble it up. For example you can create a similar dish with various ingredients, but the chef is the one who determines what you eat unless you ask to alter it. A hamburger can be made in numerous ways with different toppings. However people tend to choose what they like and order based on their preferences. It's still a hamburger/cheeseburger no matter what toppings or type of bun they use. Or if you want to argue it's a veggie burger, or a buffalo burger based on the meat you choose, whatever it's a burger. The same way people tend to go to news sources that confirm their biases as they order food based on their tastes. The news gets to choose which bits of information they use to construct the narrative the viewer reads. You can go to another news source and get true information which constructs another narrative. The key is going to multiple sources, and not allowing one chef to tell you what the traditional dish consists of, and go to multiple news sources to find the other side of the story. Most people tend to trust large corporations to be the voice of authority for them and never check out other items because they feel it doesn't fit their taste.
Moral of the story expand your pallet. You may not know what else is out there unless you try it.
