You wouldn't know whether the crowds that welcomed him in New York were Jews that were happy with him about his stand against Nazi German or about his scientific discoveries.

The Nazi party was founded on the 24 February 1920 and Einstein came in the US in April 1921
so it is obvious that Einstein was already aware of the Nazi party.
Sure, Nazi Germany came after that but the seed of hatred toward Jews were already sown.
Knowing this Einstein was against Nazism and Jews in America welcome Einstein in great number.
Very little to do with Einstein as a scientist.

As you can see by the time that Einstein came to America Jews in there were already aware of Einstein as
a man with a noble cause and little known about his scientific discoveries.
