I demonized Ronald (6 letters) Wilson (6 letters) Reagan (6 letters) (666, get it?) back in the 80s and could cite actual Scripture at the time when doing so.
My point is, this ain't exactly a new thing.
Go look up some of the anti-Catholic stuff on presidential candidate (and president) Kennedy. To this day, BTW, I find his defense of the "Catholic thing", that he wasn't a very good Catholic, to be problematic on several levels. But even as a kid growing up in the 60s, I was aware there was some pretty virulent anti-Catholic sentiment. Even heard it from folks/relatives and that was despite some Catholic intermarriage already existing in the family at that time.
