I'm really shocked that the democrats went with Clinton over Sanders to begin with. The democrats would have won hands down if they'd have stuck with Sanders. I still wouldn't have voted for him, but he would have won the electoral college well enough to take the presidency. I'd be inclined to think that any third party candidate that branches off from one of the parties would ensure the win for the other party regardless of which side splits off. I'd be all for the democrats branching off with a third party though.
The DNC did their very best to make sure Clinton won over Sanders. And she still couldn't mathematically eliminate him. It was an uphill battle for him all the way, and he still became the most popular politician in the country. I don't really know why he stuck with the DNC after they stabbed him in the back, but we'll see what happens in 2018 and 2020.
