-as a related aside...I asked a question once in a math class as a child.....that probably determined the future arc of my life. It was a "why" question in algebra, the answer being "define your variables" - but the answer I got was "because it does". I didn't get the answer until I was an adult.
Had it gone another way, I'd probably have ended up a mathematician. Who knows what I'd have come up with in the decades since. Come to think of it, that lady was an asshole - and just look at what happened.
I had teachers like that as well as did my wife. One of my goals is that my students (the ones in HS) will never feel that way.
