I know, emotions don't make any mathematical sense. I'm sure that you have grown accustomed to using emotions in your decision making.
Without emotions there would be no reason to make decisions, an uncaring person would have no values and no reason to take any action for any purposes.
A lot of societal actions are harmless (ex. helping someone who is not a dangerous asshole), and they are okay to do just because they can and we need collaboration in general to survive as a species. The problem happens when any powerful person with destructive means uses emotions to control society in a way that opens the victims up to harmful activities.
