Another take on the same story:

It's a nice change from virgin Marys and Jesus Christs " appearing " in strange places.
I actually read about it a few years back. The image was taken in a Brandenburg forest. It appears that, during the 1930s, some local businessman in the area got sent to a Concentration Camp and some locals in the area decided to prove their loyalty to Hitler by removing some of the pine trees and replace them with larches, so that, for a few weeks every year, the larch's trees would contrast with the pine needles, thus creating a swastika to appease Hitler. Due to the short duration of the effect, and the fact that decent cars, let alone aircraft were rare in the days of East Germany, it went unnoticed until the 1990s. Apparently, somebody managed to survey the land at the right time of the year, and because the German attitude toward the Third Reich, they had to remove it.
TL;DR: The appearance of a forest swastika was entirely intentional.
