The world would be a better place if there wasn't so much hate being passed down from generation to generation and from person to person.
I think having tolerance and compassion goes a long way toward shaping ones character. It speaks mounds about a person when they can still hold on to their values, while being able to calmly and rationally disagree with someone about something. Not everyone has to agree with the popular opinion and that's okay. Having the popular opinion doesn't always hold exclusivity with being right all the time.
The problem, and I have experienced this first hand, is that those who are intolerant of others expect you to be tolerant of their intolerance.
I have had people say, "You're not being very tolerant of my viewpoint." - when that viewpoint was veritable prejudice.
I know, right. But that is how they think.
Further arguing with them does no good, because I have had their friends gang up on me with "We have the right to free speech and we're exercising it".
You just can't reason with that kind of stupid.
