The more one things about heaven and hell, the less enjoyable and ridiculous it feels. Spending eternity anywhere will eventually become torture. What will you do with your life when you're done everything you can think of doing, and everything everyone you know can think of doing, too many times to count? And knowing you'll keep on existing for an eternity after all that? Or will we just be a bunch of lobotomized sheep after this god scoops out everything about us he finds undesirable, which I'm sure is almost all of us?
Or you can choose hell. Which is an eternity drowning in a lake of fire, or just "separation from god"? The latter sounds great to a nonbeliever who is familiar with the old testament, and the not so nice parts of the new testament. The first position being so horrible that I can't imagine anyone worshiping such a god for anything but fear. And he does command you to fear him.
The idea of people sending themselves to hell is silly too. You go to the void and decide you don't want to go to hell or heaven. Then what? This god seems to have made it an ultimatum. Unless you believe in purgatory, but even that is supposed to be temporary. Eventually someone or something forces a choice on you. People who say you send yourself to hell just don't like the idea that their beloved god created a pit of fire to torture his enemies. Unless you just believe in the "separation from god" angle, in which case I guess most people would go to gladly.
One of the weirder things is, I was taught that god wants everyone to get into heaven. He knows this isn't going to happen, but doesn't seem to care to find a way to get at least most people into heaven. The bible is basically the story of god's failure to get people to do what he wants them to do. He supposedly knows everything, and is all powerful, but isn't a very wise being. If he really does know everything he needs to know to get what he wants, and still fails, he's either a fool or lazy. Well, we know he's petty, so there's that.
