The obvious problem with Step #1 is that you can only read what has survived. We know this happy horseshit went through extensive editing before it was ever incorporated into any sort of "bible" so what exactly would you be reading? Greek, Latin or Sanskrit, it doesn't matter if the source material is unreliable.
That's what Step #2 is for - time it right and you can look over the shoulders of the original scribes.
