I was reading a story last week on the North Korean defector (can't remember if it was the NY Times or The Guardian) and it said the vast majority of South Koreans suffered from parasitic worms up until the 1970s too until the gov't there campaigned to eliminate the problem.
I thought the video of his escape was astonishing. A guy who was shot and already in a weakened state from malnutrition running like the Dickens away from everything he knows to freedom. Just crazy.
