Actually, the system has a shorthand notation for larger numbers - you put a line over the top of V (for example) and it would be read as '5000' (I just can't suss out how to make an overscore on this keyboard). Thus, the answer to 37's addition problem could be written IVCCXCIX, with the superscript over the IV, turning '4' into '4000'.
