Why not look for god in the natural world? Start with what you know about god - really, nothing at all from authority. Forget the bible and the leadership of churches. Just look at where you encounter God, presumably in prayer or in what you take to be signs.
To say that you discover God in your head makes it sound bad. But in that God is in good company. Your identity/character/personality is also in your head. Doesn't mean that you don't exist or that who you are is just something you make up. Same thing with god.
There you go, a natural god right there in your noggin right next to your natural you.
