Broke loose, you mean the promoters cut it loose as a publicity stunt.The story also goes it was drifting towards some airport or other so they had some bloke with a rifle shoot holes in it to bring it down. I don't know how effective that would be. Sama, what say you?

Remember when the Mythbusters controlled the altitude on their balloon lawn chair with a pellet rifle? Bullet holes would bring it down. More bullet holes would bring it down faster. The Red Baron would snuff it. (Most of his 80+ kills were balloons. Nothing to sneeze at, they were defended heavily by ground artillery.)
