Nah, seriously though, my gf said she enjoyed the film too, without seeing the show.
I didn't like anything in the film. From the acting to the special effects to the slow fighting pace to the skipped storyparts (which I understand in a film-adaptation but still) to the impossible time-table (Zhao has a teleporter I swear) to the weak introduction of the fire-lord to ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF EXPOSITION to ...
I could go on. I don't think I would have liked the film, even if I hadn't seen the show. The show is fucking amazing though. And this film doesn't do anything to tear that down. But it is an unnecessary adaptation that just failed on so many levels. And even more obviously when you know the source material, I guess.
Have you seen the show since, Shell?
I didn't think it was anything to write home about, to be sure. Still, it was fun for kids, had some decent effects/action, etc. No worse or better than most of action/fantasy movies.
I haven't caught the show since. I have a hard time enjoying cartoons if they're meant to be serious. Only very few have a good enough story for me to suspend disbelief. I prefer funny cartoons. We've been meaning to give Spirited Away a chance, though.
To each their own, I guess.

I didn't like the effects myself. But I don't know how other fantasy films stack up on that front. I've seen Narnia once and I've forgotten most of it because it wasn't appealing to me at all. Never seen the golden compass either. Harry Potter had some wonky moments in the special effects, though I haven't seen those all that often. I remember the last movies being quite convincing in the special effects department though.Haven't seen the hunger games or the one in which all the kids are roman/greek gods or whatever... Perhaps the effects were decent in comparison, but they didn't appeal to me.
I want to watch spirited away too. Maybe tonight, now you reminded me. I think it's on netflix, right?
