My personal preference would be to make sure we have enough jack boots to go around and then send the military in to confiscate every gun in America. I've never balked at taking a gun out of a cold dead hand. Hell that would just make the job easier.
That would work. Most of them would give up their guns the moment they're faced with a genuine threat because up until then they only thought they were tough because they had a bang stick that they took out to the range every weekend. A bit like the armed guard who decided not to confront the latest shooter with an AR 15 in fact.
