I've been there.  It's nice but let's not get carried away with this 4th century shit.  The original building was demolished and replaced by Sixtus V in the 16th century which makes it contemporaneous with St Peter's which is both larger and more grand in the usual garish, over-stated, overdone, shit-ass way that catholicks do everything.

Calling St John Lateran "4th century" is like saying "I have a 5,000 year old axe.  True, the handle broke and I replaced that and then the head broke and I replaced that.... but the axe is 5,000 years old."

The cavalry barracks dates from the 2d century and at least the horseshit they have there would tell us what the horses ate.
