It has to do with the concept of "fana" which means annihilation.
And because Muslims were materialistic and forgot the purpose was to disappear into the light, into God and the Messenger and make the journey to the holiest place of prostration to God, they could never see it simply a story that both of them were seeking to annihilate themselves, and Abraham was seeking to annihilate the soul of Ishmael into God so that he becomes one of the "patient".
