Oh well, at least that actually has nothing to do with being liberal, and sounds more like the so-called "regressive left" (who are too authoritarian to actually be left) misidentifying as liberal to me.
It's generalizing the voting patterns of a demographic. People in the US who have the characteristic 'liberal' are more likely to have the characteristic of 'not voting rather than voting for a candidate they dislike.' I would say there is very likely a direct correlation.
As for misidentifying, that may be. But we've had a fairly agreed upon definition of liberal in the context of US politics in place over here for a couple decades. The country switching from what it's meant to us for 20+ years to 'what Hammy thinks it should mean' would probably cause more confusion than good.
