Except when one points out the outlier that is Stalin, it's "he didn't commit atrocities because of atheism" all of the sudden... Christianity has been around for 2000 years, what you describe has existed since time immemorial and has nothing to do with "religion" but is a product of human nature which is not at all inherently virtuous, hence the saying "absolute power corrupts absolutely".
