Easy for me to post this as a non-father, but I note even anencephaly is not universally regarded as untreatable. Nearly, but not quite. With the emotional impact of an infant, and treatment usually underwritten by somebody else, it just gets to seem very easy to throw resources at medical issues that are unamenable to treatment.
I also point out, it the 'goal' is to save pediatric lives, even a single 'expensive' care plan could, if the $$$$ was reassigned to pediatric vaccines in second and third world locales, the numbers saved would be considerable. Unfortunately, we don't have unlimited resources, and even pointing out seemingly minor changes to triage theory regarding doing the greatest good for the greatest number of infants will still be controversial.
Maybe that's why math majors aren't in charge of that sort of thing ?
