Ok when people ask these questions I feel we confuse ourselves by not asking the right ones.
You say "Have they been programmed" that is a question no one can prove, but what can be proved is that there are enough elements to create everything that is needed, why and how is that so?
You say "Was life the aim of the universe or a product of it?" my answer would be it doesn't matter, whether it was either is not the point, the point is that it "can" produce life and that fact alone means there is more to the story.
As I said the universe has no given right to produce anything if it's all just empty matter, but it does, to me it's not so much that it's magical but more alien like in wonder.
The Universe to me "fact" operates in an intelligent fashion, it recycles itself, has all the right properties for creation and destruction, has the right properties for life ..... how anyone can think this is possible from nothing is beyond me.
Once again I must be clear before you give it the Goddidit speech, what is my idea of God? it's definitely not the traditional version you all think it means.
