When we need a new mod the staff votes on a pool of suggested candidates. In the past we've asked whether the members wanted to elect staff themselves but it's been rejected each time.

Not that it matters much I'm sure, but are you sure it's working properly? Mine's on five stars for 8518 posts including this one.
I think Donators get 5 stars regardless of their post count.
