That, or their argument can't stand for itself. I recently had an argument about addiction and my "opponent", after being shown his argument was garbage, proceeded with the personal insults and attempts to discredit me personally. It's hard to dismiss information from the American Medical Association and the National Institute on Drug Addiction, I was the easier target.
Take the insults as a compliment for your argument. Then, like Min said, throw a few back for the fun of it.
