Well said.  To generalize this idea a bit more, I'd say the following: if you have nothing constructive to add to a dialog, say nothing.  IMO, responding on impulse, especially when negative emotions are running high, increases the likelihood of people entrenching themselves in one-sided mindsets and managing their differences negatively. 

That said, IMO, your post highlights a unique trait of self-discipline, which IMO, is an art-form in itself.  One day, I'd like to be able to master this beautiful and fascinating art-form.
