It's been a while since I did any reading in math. The last I remember was about fractional calculus. I spent hours and hours and gave myself a headache trying to figure out a way to define a half derivative on my own, but I finally gave up and looked it up. Then I spent hours and hours and gave myself a headache learning about it. I never did get a clear view of it, or of its applications.

Yes, fractional derivatives are mostly a curiosity. At the very least, you need some Fourier analysis to even begin to see why they might be studied. But I'm not convinced they really are useful for much.
