Apparently, by all accounts, Herod the Great was a nasty piece of work, having one of his wives and two of his sons executed, but there's no real corroboration that anything like the Massacre of the Innocents happened. Not saying it's totally out of character for him to have done such a thing, but only the Gospel of Matthew mentions it. That's literally the only historical source (such as it is) detailing such an event. No other corroboration has occurred, not even in the other three Gospels.
