The nearest star (actually three stars) is Alpha A & B and Proxima Centauri. Obviously near enough that they can move beyond the speed of light around the Earth in a circle with a radius of 4.37 light years to pick out a city (but not a stable) and then back to their original places during the day time. All makes perfect sense now.
Far more sensible to suggest this than that it was actually some kind of a Chinese lantern.
