If we compared homophobic attitudes to religiosity for different countries, I wonder whether there would be a correlation? I'm thinking there would be a fairly strong positive one.

And, to expand on the idea of tribalism being the cause, it's simple: if you can control how a group engages in sexual intercourse, and if you can control a group's food supply, you can make that group do whatever you want.
