I read in a news article on BT.dk that keeping a sturdy eating schedule/pattern instead of calculating calories or what have you, was more effective in keeping a steady weight than anything else that one could do.
Basically, if you had a eating schedule and stuck to that schedule, foregoing snack-eating and whatever, you would have an easier time losing weight. This is, of course, if you have a realistic schedule, that you can follow and has a net calorie loss.
