I find that you can recognise someone with true expertise of their subject because they are able to describe it in ways that a lay person can understand. This is because the expert has started to see the bigger picture and the underlying cause behind all the details.
Philosophy students seem to come out of university though not being understood by anyone. I just nod and say "That's nice dear".
