I can guess that the common theist answer is that we can't even approach understanding God's motivation for such things, therefore it is futile to speculate.
Asking these kind of questions though defeats the whole purpose of a belief in god, which is ascribing meaning to an existence that is otherwise pointless in the grand scheme of things.
