Firesticks are hackable. Some users hack them to use other services which makes them vulnerable to viruses. There's a particularly nasty data mining bot that's known to infect Firesticks that have been altered to use a service called Kodi. So, if anyone suggests you alter the programming of one in any way, I'd advise not listening to them.
ROKU has about 2 dozen features you can unlock by hacking he programming, but doing so doesn't leave the system vulnerable. Yet. Users are essentially just unlocking features in the programming the same way someone might change the region code on a DVD player. I still wouldn't recommend doing it, just to be on the safe side though.
