You can't be certain you did never had any virus because there are ways for some of these to hide themselves from AV like polymorphic code ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polymorphic_code ) , cryptography , act differently that majority of viruses etc...
A virus is a program that replicate itself in the computer ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_virus ) unlike worms ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_worm ) that replicate themselves to others computers.
We can find malware that does not replicate themselves and many of these are trojan horse ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trojan_horse_(computing) ).
There are many categories of malware.
For example some trojan horse are worms and others trojan horse are not.
Some spyware ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spyware ) are keylogger ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keystroke_logging ) but others are not.
