It isn't a matter of banning transportation, but getting transportation off of burning fossil fuels.
Just like we no longer use rotary phones but now have cell phones.
Rotary phones are still compatible with central office switches, at least until recently. AT&T was still selling them on contract to a few hundred folks at $300 or so per year.
