Help me identify a Christian saint
#16
RE: Help me identify a Christian saint
A problem with identifying some of the older Christian saints is that they ever never existed , like say St Christopher or St George (these two I think have been removed from the pantheon by the Church)

Or they began as pagan gods or goddesses; Eg In Ireland; pre Christian shrines to the earth mother have been usurped by the Virgin Mary. Or turned into say the horned devil, who had been Pan.

In south America, many Maya/ Aztec/Inca gods have become Christian saints..

A bit OT

I also came across a really weird claim I want to follow up because it makes a kind of sense; The black virgin' is found in several parts of Europe, (and I think, SouthAmerica) The official explanation is that the statues have become black from hundreds of years of candle soot, I think that's horse shit.

Another explantation, although perhaps a bit 'out there" is the statues were introduced by the Romani(gypsy) people, in the form of their patron saint, St Sara.(aka Sara La Kali) That the Romani were originally from Northern India. Their saint had originally been the black goddess Kali.

"Saint Sarah, also known as Sara-la-Kali ("Sara the Black", Romani: Sara e Kali), is the patron saint of the Romani people. The center of her veneration is Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a place of pilgrimage for Roma in the Camargue, in southern France. Legend identifies her as the servant of one of the Three Marys, with whom she is supposed to have arrived in the Camargue.[1] "

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Sarah

The transformation of diverse gods and goddesses into Christian figure doesn't surprise me. All religions either adapt with changing needs of their worshippers, or they cease to exist. The Catholic church has been expert at adaption for nearly 2000 years , Within my life time it has not kept up with the rate of change,Eg it has ignored the call for female priests, allowing the marriage of clergy and of course a basic change in its attitude to sexuality.
.
The result has been its increasing irrelevance since WW2. That has been compounded by arrogant way it has managed the horrible child sex scandal. IMO the Catholic church will cease to function in developed countries within the next 50 years.,Unless of course there are massive changes..

I think I've made my point about Christian saints.
