American Atheists has been a controversial group in the atheist community. One of the biggest sore points was former head Ellen Johnson insistence on capitalizing the word. "atheist," which would imply we are a homogenized group which we are not.
That said, this group has been very action-oriented. They have stood up and taken action when other atheist groups have demurred. They are not afraid of controversy or confrontation.
I have never been a member of this group. I generally favor a less adversarial approach because of our minority status. If it's us against theists in the USA, we lose in a numerical battle. I'd rather make a truce with non-dogmatic, liberal theists. AA is very confrontational which sometimes is necessary, sometimes counter-productive.
I guess me and American Atheists are like the way Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were: Friendemies.

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
