Ok, so ALL those Radical Republicans who voted, who lobbied, who - quite frankly - used whatever political dirty tricks they could get away with to end chattel slavery in the US were not being virtuous?

The Radical Republicans' heyday was more post-war than anything else. They were equally, if not more concerned with protecting their own business interests and maintaining/seizing political power as they were with anything else.
True enough, they were instrumental in setting Reconstruction policy. However, they got distracted by in-fighting, power-grabs, and fast choo-choo trains, and FAILED miserably. That failure of which subsequently ushered in the glorious horror show we know of as Jim Crow.  So....¯\_(ツ)_/¯
