I've been advised to have my cat spayed because the risk of infection outweighs the risk of surgery. Otherwise, I wouldn't have her spayed. She's indoors, and I don't care about heats. Professional animal doctors seem to think it's a good idea. It'll be done in a clean, safe environment. What you describe certainly is barbaric.
