Declawing a cat is no different to me than spaying or neutering a cat or dog. I would consider it cruel if you didn't put them under. I would consider it cruel if you had an outdoor cat and declawed them. Outdoor cats need their claws. Indoor cats do not. Just like indoor cats don't need their penises or vaginas.
Have you missed everything said in this thread about the health problems associated with declawing, vs the health benefits associated with neutering?
Are you aware that neutering/spaying doesn't involve the loss of the penis or vagina?
