Persecution complex is very strong here, I think. You see it with the religious, you see it with some progressive "SJWs" as they're called, and you see it with gun owners.
This obsession with defending one's self is largely irrational, and at this point it's fairly antiquated idea. Mostly because the amount of places in the US that you are legitimately unsafe without a firearm is... low.
