I get that they have that sure, But I see way to much of that shit in the news to think it isn't manipulated after recording it. If you can make it look like that on a cell phone, I am quite sure a laptop can manipulate the video after the fact as well.
It is probably a mix of both, but still, that shit is annoying when you are watching a TV, I hate a truncated view. The old fogie in me.
The person who takes a video or a photograph owns that video or photograph, and it can't be edited without their express permission (here, at least). News outlets who use content from outside providers may be prohibited from manipulating the video.
I'm not a video editor (someone please correct me if I get this wrong) but I suspect that if a video taken in portrait mode were expanded to full screen, it would distort the image.
