Those carved monsters you see on cathedrals and other buildings aren't necessarily gargoyles. They're technically called 'grotesques'. 'Gargoyle' refers to a specific type of grotesque designed to direct water away from the sides of a building, using a spout generally incorporated into the mouth of the sculpture.
