When your brain changes so does the personality and temperament of the person. If they were a "soul" then all that would change would be the speed they reacted not the fundamental nature of who they are.

Either way, there was no global flood.
And no regional flood that could have been that large.
The only possibility is that the story is based on memories of the flooding of the Black sea, thousands of years earlier.
