Stressing on this over and over to attack Muslims are identical to one shooting their own foot. FGM is not a Muslim issue; enough said that its ancient and dates way before Islam.
Yeah, the practice is pretty well-established in Egypt, since at least the Late Period of Ancient Egypt, possibly as far back as the Middle Kingdom if spell 1117 from the Coffin Texts is being translated correctly. My research tells me that, while many practicioners claim it's a religious commandment, that's not quite the case (while there are a few hadith [of debated authenticity] where Muhammad praises it, he doesn't claim it's mandatory).
Map of countries where it's practiced:
Notice that while many of the countries that aren't grey on this map are Muslim-majority, many Muslim-majority countries don't even register on the map (Saudi Fucking Arabia being one), so clearly, it isn't necessarily a Muslim issue. And to further drive the point home, let's compare the map above with this one which maps the dominant religious beliefs of particular nations:
And, indeed, the UN has noted (on page 81 of this report) that in several nations where it's practiced, not only do non-Muslims practice it, in a few nations, (Niger, Nigeria, and Tanzania particularly standing out) it's actually practiced more by non-Muslims.
As a side note, Judaism strictly forbids female genital mutilation, but there was one group that didn't, and they were, of course, the Beta Israel of Ethiopia. And once many of them emigrated to Israel, they stopped the practice.
